It was never about Hamas

The current Western-supported Zionist genocide of Palestinians was never about “fighting Hamas.”

Palestinian Reverend Dr. Munther Isaac, author of Christ in the Rubble argues that future historians will record the genocide as a tragic result of politicians who “ ‘neither feared God nor had respect for people,’ ” and “whose actions and inactions were fueled by coloniality, racism, and empire theology.” (1) This is what the genocide is really about.

Coloniality and racism have been amply established. The illegal separation wall, the on-going economic siege, and the denial of equal rights to Palestinians are all colonial, racist realities (2),  and they all pre-date October 7.

The Archbishop of Canterbury recently acknowledged that, “the Advisory Opinion by the International Court of Justice (19 July 2024) makes definitively clear that Israel’s presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is unlawful and needs to end as rapidly as possible.”

He also acknowledged that, “ it is clear to me that the regime imposed by successive Israeli governments in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is one of systemic discrimination. Through annexing Palestinian land for illegal settlements, depriving Palestinians access to their own natural resources, and imposing a system of military rule that denies them safety and justice, the State of Israel has been denying the Palestinian people dignity, freedom and hope.  I am particularly aware of how this is impacting Palestinian Christians, threatening their future and viability. It is clear that ending the occupation is a legal and moral necessity.” (3)

The tragedy of October 7 is also best-understood in the context of coloniality, and racism.  A fabricated false flag military operation (4) is consistent with these underpinning realities as it fabricates the current “consent” for genocide.

Former US President Biden  said in 1986 that “if there were not an Israel, we’d have to invent one.” (5)

The same logic applies to Hamas.  If a sectarian opposition did not exist, Washington or Israel would have to create it.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu even admitted that they (Zionists) supported Hamas to divide the opposition. (6)

In March 2019, speaking to the KNESSET, Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly explained that,  ”anyone Who Wants to Avoid the Creation of the Palestinian State Has to Support Hamas And Has to Transfer Money to Hamas. This is What We Are Doing. This is Part of Our Strategy: To Finance Hamas So That There Will Never Be a Palestinian State.”  (7)The rationale here is that by supporting Hamas, the resistance is weakened and the Zionists are empowered.

Divide and conquer.  This is the logic of Empire.

Following the tragedy of October 7, Netanyahu falsely framed Palestinians as Amalekites. This, according to Isaac, is “a twisted vision of biblical conquest and annihilation” (8), furthermore, he explains that “the demonization of the people of Gaza has been an important tool in enabling this genocide.” (9)

So again we see that racism, and empire theology fuse into each other to demonize and dehumanize prey peoples, to breach international law, and to provide a false ideological underpinning not only for settler-colonialism but also for genocide.

Isaac advises that, “as Christians who are guided by the ethics of Jesus, we must be the first to challenge the logic of Empire.  And we must also challenge those  who, from positions of privilege and superiority, conveniently use religious texts to endorse self-entitlement as if they are above the law.” (10)

Hamas, supported in the past to “divide the opposition”,  and the tragic events of the October 7 false flag, welded to racism, settler-colonialism and empire theology, all serve to advance imperial genocide of Palestinians and concealed objectives of illegal resource acquisition/theft, and imperial hegemony.
