The White House has published the ‘National Security Strategy of the United States of America’, an annual document signed by President Trump that outlines the fundamental principles of US policy. This important document has essentially been ignored by our mainstream political and media outlets, despite them reporting on Trump’s media statements every day. It is therefore important to understand its key concepts.
First and foremost, the document emphasises that, to ensure America remains the strongest, richest and most powerful country in the world for decades to come, a coherent and focused strategy for engaging with the rest of the world is needed. This strategy rests on two interconnected pillars:
1) “We want to recruit, train, equip and deploy the world’s most powerful, lethal and technologically advanced military to protect our interests, deter wars and, if necessary, win them quickly and decisively with minimal casualties among our forces.
2) We want the strongest, most dynamic, innovative and advanced economy in the world. The United States’ economy is the foundation of the American way of life. It is also the foundation of our global position and the necessary basis for our Armed Forces.”
For this reason, the world is divided into “areas of responsibility”, each of which is entrusted to one of the United States Combatant Commands, fuelled by colossal military spending. This is decided not by individual administrations but by a bipartisan alliance: a veritable cross-party war party, composed of both Republicans and Democrats. This is confirmed by the fact that the United States Congress is about to pass a bill that allocates an additional 8 billion dollars to the Department of War, on top of the 900 billion dollars requested by the Trump administration. The Department of War also has additional funds amounting to more than $100 billion, which can be spent on new weapons and military space activities, bringing the Pentagon’s budget for fiscal year 2026 to over $1 trillion. In addition to this, there is $30 billion for nuclear weapons, allocated in the Department of Energy’s budget. The United States’ National Security Strategy emphasises:
“We want the world’s most robust, credible and modern nuclear deterrent, as well as next-generation missile defences, to protect the American people, American assets abroad and America’s allies.”
Other military expenditure includes the Department of Veterans Affairs, which has requested a record allocation of $441.3 billion for the 2026 financial year — an increase of around 10% on 2025 — to provide health and social assistance to retired military personnel.
In addition to the budget of the US Department of Defense, there is that of the US Department of Homeland Security. According to the budget proposed by President Trump, the department will receive $107 billion in 2026 (two-thirds more than in 2025), as well as specific funding for border reinforcement that could reach $43.8 billion. This is in addition to the funding allocated to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which is set to increase to around £27 billion in 2026. The aim of this funding is to expand detention capacity to over 100,000 beds, hire thousands of new agents, and significantly enhance deportation operations. This will transform ICE into one of the largest federal law enforcement agencies in the country. The recruitment poster reads:
“America has been invaded by criminals and predators. We need YOU to drive them out.”
While proceeding with the arrest and deportation of a growing number of immigrants, especially those from Venezuela and other Latin American countries, the Trump Administration is offering the “Trump Gold Card”, which grants residency in the United States to foreign nationals who, after paying a non-refundable fee of $15,000 to the Department of Homeland Security, make a “contribution” of $1 million. By paying a “contribution” of $5 million (in addition to the usual registration fee), they can obtain the “Trump Platinum Card”, which entitles them to spend up to 270 days in the United States without being subject to non-US income tax.
