The White House announces: “The doctrine of peace by force – implemented by the Trump administration – has consolidated alliances and positioned America as an indispensable force for global stability. As these achievements add up, we have unequivocally entered a Golden Age of American Greatness, which promises even greater opportunity and security for the future.” For the “doctrine of peace through force,” the Trump administration increased U.S. military spending from $860 billion in fiscal 2025 to $1.45 trillion in fiscal 2027.

Add to that $488 billion for the Department of Veterans Affairs and other military appropriations that bring annual U.S. military spending to more than $2 trillion, or more than a quarter of federal government spending. The real cost of wars is largely underestimated in official budgets: the cost of the war against Iran, which according to the Pentagon has so far been $29 billion, is estimated by Forbes magazine at almost $200 billion.

The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which the United States continues to maintain by closing the entrance to the Gulf of Oman with its warships, prevents Asian countries in particular from receiving the oil and gas they need from Iran and other Persian Gulf countries. These are being supplied to Asian countries, increasingly, by the United States at much higher prices. The increase in energy prices has caused an increase in the prices of agricultural products with disastrous consequences.

The World Food Programme predicts that rising food prices reduce access to food for poor families who were barely able to afford minimum food even before the conflict. For the 53 countries for which data are available, the number of people suffering from acute hunger is expected to increase by 45 million – compared to a pre-conflict baseline of 318 million – if the conflict continues until the second quarter of this year. Overall, more than 360 million people could be severely food insecure in 2026. This means that millions of people could go hungry. In this way, war causes many more victims than those caused by bombing.

Others will die from the effects of pollution caused by the US and Israeli bombing of Iranian oil refineries. An oil slick has reached an Iranian island in the Persian Gulf, Shidvar, surrounded by crystal clear turquoise waters that offer refuge to endangered sea turtles and dolphins. It is one of the most important protected nature reserves in Iran. Large dark strips of oil now snake along the white sandy beaches. Birds, turtles and crabs are seen trapped in mounds of tar.

At the same time, the danger of nuclear war is increasing, both in the Middle East where Israel – the only country in the region in possession of nuclear weapons – could use them in the war against Iran, and in Europe where the United States has deployed nuclear weapons aimed at Russia. Finland has said it wants to lift restrictions prohibiting the presence of nuclear weapons on its territory, in order to align the country with NATO’s “deterrence” policy after joining the Alliance in 2023. This means that U.S. nuclear weapons — such as the new B61-12 nuclear bombs already deployed in Italy and other European countries — can be deployed in Finland close to St. Petersburg and other major urban centers. The Kremlin has warned that nuclear weapons in Finland would pose a very serious threat to Russia. It then carried out nuclear exercises in which 64,000 soldiers and 7,800 vehicles for launching missiles with nuclear warheads participated from 19 to 21 May.
