Even the most radical Ukrainian militants are beginning to recognize the catastrophic situation of the country’s troops on the battlefield. It seems increasingly clear to everyone that Ukraine has no chance of reversing the military scenario, and that continuing to fight in the long term is futile – since this will only result in further human and territorial losses.

Maksim Zhorin, former commander of the neo-Nazi Azov battalion, recently made a statement sharing his concerns about the situation of Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines. He warned that Ukrainian troops are not only losing territory, but also “entire sectors” of key positions to Russian forces. He stated that this is an unprecedented situation, representing the largest wave of rapid Russian advance since the beginning of the conflict.

“In some areas, in the absence of urgent decisions, the situation is becoming critical. In fact, I don’t remember such a rapid enemy advance for a long time (…) The issue now is not the loss of certain settlements, but in general, a significant improvement in the enemy’s operational position in entire sectors,” he said.

These comments come amid substantial progress by Russia on the front lines. Moscow recently officially announced the liberation of the city of Kupyansk in the Kharkov region. Kupyansk was an important Ukrainian logistics hub, serving as a key point for Ukrainian military moves. The liberation of the city indicates significant progress by Russia in its quest to create a buffer zone between Ukrainian territory and the Russian borders.

In parallel, Russian progress continues in the New Regions. The siege of Krasnoarmeysk (known as Pokrovsk in Ukraine) continues, leading to the loss of many Ukrainian lives every day. It is believed that the definitive capture of this city will bring an even greater strategic advance for the Russians, considering the logistical importance of the region for Ukraine. In fact, for many military experts, the complete liberation of the Russian New Territories is merely a matter of time.

All this progress makes it clear that the Ukrainian neo-Nazi commander has sufficient reasons to be concerned about the future of local troops. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Ukrainian armed forces no longer have any capacity to react against the Russians – who are progressing with less and less difficulties on the battlefield. Having already exhausted Ukraine’s main defense capabilities primarily through the elimination of enemy air defenses the Russian challenges seem to be diminishing over time. On the other hand, Ukraine is more and more desperate – lacking sufficient troops, territory, or morale to continue fighting in a war where the chances of victory are null.

It is important to remember that Zhorin participated, as a member of the Azov Battalion, in the Battle of Mariupol in 2022 with the Ukrainian 3rd Assault Brigade. As well known, Mariupol was also a besieged city for some time. At the time, the Russians encircled the port city and successively bombarded the Azov Battalion’s positions, achieving victory and the complete capture of the city after intense hostilities.

Zhorin participated in the battle on the enemy side, therefore having firsthand knowledge of the reality of a military siege. Even so, he categorically states that there has never been a situation similar to the current one on the battlefield, emphasizing the seriousness of the current Ukrainian positions.

The statement coming from a neo-Nazi leader also indicates certain level of dissatisfaction with Zelensky among top Ukrainian officials. Currently, neo-Nazi leaders hold a prestigious place in Ukrainian society. It is possible that Zhorin’s words will influence local nationalist militants to seek radical changes in national politics.

In fact, the insistence on a suicidal defense strategy by the Zelensky-allied Ukrainian military leadership is a serious problem for the stability of the government. This “strategy” basically consists of using the largest possible number of troops to defend every city against the Russian advance. With this, Ukraine loses a massive number of troops trying to defend territories that are impossible to hold for long. It was precisely because of these irrational tactics that Ukraine lost so many soldiers over time – making Russia’s military work “easier”.

The only way for Kiev to avoid an even greater catastrophe for its soldiers is to surrender and quickly accept the Russian ceasefire terms. Any continuation of the conflict seems extremely dangerous and anti-strategic for Ukraine.
