Now that the ceasefire is in place, will there finally be peace in Gaza? In order for this question to be answered, the events that have taken place since 7 October 2023, which we called ‘the 9/11 of the Middle East’, have been reconstructed by Grandangolo, with links being established between the Middle Eastern scenario and the European and American ones.

Before we go any further, it is vital to understand the key elements of Trump’s Peace Plan, which we previously explored in the Grandangolo episode titled “The Peacemakers”. We republish these elements below.

“Gaza will be governed by a technocratic and apolitical Palestinian committee responsible for the day-to-day management of public services. This committee will comprise qualified Palestinians and international experts, supervised and controlled by a new international transitional body, the Peace Council. This council will be led by President Donald J. Trump, with other members and Heads of State to be announced, including former Prime Minister Tony Blair.

“The formation of an International Stabilisation Force (ISF) is to be deployed immediately to Gaza, with the United States working in collaboration with Arab and international partners. The ISF will train and support a carefully selected Palestinian police force. The Israel Defence Forces will gradually hand over the territory of Gaza to the International Stabilisation Force, with the exception of a perimeter security presence that will remain until Gaza is adequately protected from any terrorist threat.”

“A Trump economic development plan is going to be created with the aim of rebuilding and revitalising Gaza, and a group of experts who have contributed to the creation of some of the Middle East’s modern cities will be brought together. Many thoughtful investment proposals and exciting development ideas have been developed by well-intentioned international groups. These will be considered. The aim is to synthesise security and governance frameworks. This is so as to attract and facilitate these investments. A special economic zone with preferential tariffs and access rates, to be negotiated with participating countries, will be established.”

The New York Times writes,

“President Trump is on the verge of achieving the greatest diplomatic feat of his second term: ending the brutal war between Israel and Hamas. He has said he is eager to fly to the Middle East to oversee the ceasefire and welcome home the hostages who have spent two long years in captivity.’ Trump says that, in the first phase of the agreement, Israel will withdraw its troops. For Mr. Trump, success in this endeavour is the ultimate proof of his self-defined goal as a negotiator and peacemaker, as well as the path to the Nobel Peace Prize he has so openly coveted.”

The reality, as shown by the facts, is very different from the picture painted by our political and media elites. Trump’s peace plan forms part of the United States’ and Israel’s strategic objectives in the Middle East. The genocide of the Palestinian people will continue, understood not only as massacre, but as the disintegration of what constitutes a nation: the state, sovereignty over its territory, the preservation of its historical and cultural heritage. This is true even if the cessation of Israeli bombing and the likely release of food aid will reduce the number of Palestinian casualties. All of this will continue to be denied to the Palestinian people. Trump’s plan aims to transform Gaza into a luxurious “Middle East Riviera” inhabited by billionaires, and the Palestinians who remain there are destined for servile roles.

The Palestinians of the West Bank are increasingly confined to areas of their territory that are now mostly under Israeli control. Israel has occupied this territory with its own settlements. The Israeli army and settlers have established a regime of terror in the West Bank, where the Palestinian population lives. Homes and olive groves are destroyed, people are imprisoned, tortured and murdered.
